What are dental implants? Dental implants are small titanium posts designed to be placed into the jawbone to provide a secure foundation for tooth replacement.
The post fuses with the jawbone preventing bone deterioration, preserving facial structure, and providing natural tooth look and function.
After the dental implant is positioned, an abutment post is attached to the implant and then a tooth crown placed atop of the abutment.
Titanium implants have a long lasting success rate with single or few teeth at a greater rate than 95% and all missing teeth from a rate between 80-90%.
Dental implants have encouraged many doctors and patients with a renewed hope and confidence in tooth loss replacement treatments due to periodontal disease and accidental tooth losses.
With the advancement of the titanium implant, a newly found secure rate of non-rejection exists.

What is periodontal disease? Periodontitis (peri = around, odont = tooth, -itis = inflammation) refers to a number of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium, the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Periodontitis involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth.
Periodontal disease is an infection caused by bacteria that adhere to and grow on the tooth's surfaces along with an overly aggressive immune response against these bacteria. A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a probe and radiographs by visual analysis to determine the amount of bone loss and gum recession around the teeth.
What are the symptoms of periodontal disease? Because periodontal disease is often considered a painless disease, inspection by you and a periodontist can help determine warning signs of infection. Look for:
gums that are red, swollen, tender, have pus or bleed easily
gumline recession from teeth
continual bad breath
lose, separated, or bite fit change of teeth
Periodontal disease can be treated successfully and with a good oral hygiene regimen of brushing at least twice daily and flossing, you can avoid re-occurring disease. And, with exercising preventive periodontics, you can help avoid other health risks too.
